What makes a good bedtime story

A bedtime story has a different job from a daytime one. It should slow things down, not wind a child up. The stories here are written to a few simple rules: a slow pace, soft sounds and textures, no villains or sudden frights, some repetition that small children can predict, and an ending where the characters go to sleep too.

Length matters as much as content. For ages 3 to 8, about 4 minutes read aloud is enough to settle without becoming another round of negotiation. Older children, 9 to 12, enjoy longer stories with a little more adventure, so those take 5 to 7 minutes.

Fairy tales, retold for bedtime

Classic fairy tales were not written for sleepy children. Many original versions include curses, wolves and punishments. Our retellings of Andersen, the Brothers Grimm and Perrault keep the parts children love, like the twenty mattresses, the pumpkin coach and the hundred-year sleep, and leave the frightening parts out. Each fairy tale page explains where the story comes from and what we changed.

How to read aloud at bedtime

  • Read more slowly than feels natural. Pauses are part of the story.
  • Lower your voice a little as the story goes on, and keep the last paragraph almost a whisper.
  • Let your child join in with the sounds (pitter-patter, tip-tap) in the younger stories.
  • Dim the lights before you start, not after the story.
  • Stop at one story. Promise the next one for tomorrow night.
