Sleep Sounds for Kids

Press play on rain, ocean waves, a crackling fire or white, pink and brown noise. Each sound loops, and the sleep timer fades it out gently. These are the same sounds as in the Droply Kids app.

The sound fades out gently when the timer ends. In the app it keeps playing with the screen locked.

Why sounds help children fall asleep

A steady, gentle sound does two things. It gives a busy mind something simple to listen to, and it covers the sudden noises that wake light sleepers: a door, a car, a sibling, the dishwasher. The brain notices changes in sound much more than sound itself, so a constant background makes the changes less noticeable.

Sounds also work as a signal. If the same rain starts every night after the story, it becomes part of the routine, a cue that it's time to sleep.

Which sound should you choose?

  • Rain and ocean waves: natural, slightly varied, good for children who find pure noise boring.
  • White noise: even and hiss-like, the best at masking sharp noises.
  • Pink and brown noise: deeper and softer than white noise. Many people find them more pleasant for a whole night.
  • Fan and fireplace: familiar, cosy sounds that many children already associate with home.

How loud, how close, how long

Keep the sound quiet, at about the level of a soft shower or a quiet conversation, and put the speaker across the room rather than next to the pillow. Paediatric guidance on sound machines advises a low volume, distance from the bed and a timer rather than full volume all night. If you have to raise your voice to talk over it, it is too loud.

Questions about sleep sounds

Is it OK to play sleep sounds all night?

Many families do, at a low volume and with the speaker away from the bed. A timer is a good compromise: the sound helps your child fall asleep and then fades out. In the Droply Kids app the timer fades out gently instead of stopping abruptly.

Which is better for kids, white noise or brown noise?

There is no single answer. White noise is better at masking sharp sounds; brown noise is deeper and many children find it calmer. Try each for a few nights at the same low volume.

Do the sounds keep playing when the screen is off?

On this website, your browser may pause audio when the phone locks. The Droply Kids app keeps playing with the screen locked and has lock-screen controls.

Are these sounds free?

All sounds on this page are free to play here. In the app, rain, ocean waves, fireplace, white noise and pink noise are free; brown noise, fan and the other sounds are part of Droply Premium.
