White Noise for Kids and Babies
Classic white noise: an even hiss that masks doors, voices and traffic. Play it here with a sleep timer, at a low volume and away from the bed.
The sound fades out gently when the timer ends. In the app it keeps playing with the screen locked.
How white noise helps children sleep
White noise contains all audible frequencies at the same strength. Because it covers the whole range, it is very good at masking sudden sounds, like a door closing, a sibling talking or a car outside. These sounds are what often wake light sleepers or keep a child from drifting off.
It also becomes a sleep cue: when the same sound starts at the same point of the routine every night, the body learns that it means sleep.
Safe volume and distance
Keep white noise quiet, at about the level of a soft shower, and place the phone or speaker on the other side of the room, not in the cot or next to the pillow. Paediatric guidance on infant sound machines recommends a low volume, a distance of a couple of metres from the bed and not running it at full volume for hours. A sleep timer is an easy way to follow that.
White noise in the Droply Kids app
Pure White Noise is free in the app, along with pink noise. The sound loops seamlessly, keeps playing with the screen locked and fades out with the timer, so you don't need to come back in to switch it off.
Questions about white noise
Is white noise bad for kids?
At a low volume, away from the bed and with a timer, white noise is widely used for children. The concerns in research are about very loud machines placed close to a baby's head for many hours. Keep it quiet and at a distance.
How loud should white noise be for a baby?
Quiet: about as loud as a soft shower, and never louder than a normal conversation. If you have to raise your voice to talk over it, turn it down.
When should my child stop using white noise?
There is no set age. Many children simply stop needing it. You can lower the volume over a few weeks or use a shorter timer until it is no longer needed.
